Accommodation Styles
Japanese ski resort accomodation can generally be broken down into three types:
Lodges
Lodges are smaller more "cosy" style accommodations and are found throughout ski resorts. Lodges may have either shared or private bathrooms, and bedding will vary from Western style to Japanese futons depending upon the property. Many lodges have communal kitchen and laundry facilities and have common areas used for relaxation, socialising and entertainment.
Self Catering
Self contained properties are private cabins, condominiums and houses which are generally booked by families or groups looking for privacy and the option of cooking and preparing their meals whilst on holidays. Many self contained properties throughout the ski resorts come in the "Canadian log house" style and all include cooking facilities, bedding, lounge areas, and heating.
Hotels
Japanese Hotels range considerably through price, star ratings and facilities. Bedding is usually Western style single or double beds or, where specified, Japanese Style futons laid on Tatami mats. Hotels will either have en suite bathrooms or will have a Japanese style Onsen bathroom comprised of a sit down shower and large hot tub refilled daily with natural mineral water. These Japanese bathrooms are usually shared, however some hotels offer guests the chance to book them privately. Other facilities in hotels generally include a restaurant, bar, ski drying rooms, and a relaxation area/lounge. Staff on site will often be available to help guests book activities in the region.
